More with Less

A Letter to the Wall Street Journal by Jim Seibert today dwells on the difference between Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation

Efficiency is doing more with less as opposed to doing less with less. The US, especially when expressed per units of GDP, is the most energy efficient economy of size in the World.

One reason that we are able to use an amount of energy out of proportion to our population is that we have excelled at producing and using it so efficiently

We will never conserve our way to prosperity and higher living standards. But we can, and have done that via the more challenging route of innovation.

And as Seibert points out, that will not be delivered through a central planning conceit that desperately want to favor wind, solar, and ethanol, whatever their limitations or contradictions be
